There’s that cliche that airhead pagent competitors like “bubble baths and long walks on the beach.” I don’t know about the bubble bath part, but I do love a long walk on the beach.
Take today for example. I’m fighting the cold from hell that’s quickly turning into a sinus infection. I barely slept last night and I feel like my head might explode at any moment. Normally that means curling up with a good book but the only books I have right now are “Power and Oppositon in Post-Revolutionary Societies” or “The New Eastern Europe: Western Responses.” Not exactly light reading.
So after three or four hours of feeling miserable and waiting for medicine to kick in I went out for a walk on the Prom, hoping the salt air would clear my head. What I wasn’t expecting was the weather to be beautiful. A slight cool breeze, sunshine and what seemed like all of Aberystwyth out to walk the Prom, play on the beach and eat ice cream. It was really comforting to walk along, hearing sea gulls and waves and let the sun warm me. I won’t say it physically made me any better but mentally it calmed me down enough to know I will get over this whatever it is eventually. I just need to be patient.
The one thing I’m not being patient/understanding about? My two back to back classes are on two different campuses. I have to walk 1.2 miles in less than 10 minutes, provided I know where I’m going and my first class gets out on time. I’m thinking I either have to change classes or talk to the professor and let her know I’m going to be late every Monday to the class. I haven’t gotten my hill-legs under me so it takes me a good half hour to get onto Penglais Campus (a mile from my dorm) and it could take me just as long to get to the other campus I can’t pronounce.
